Culture and different customs in weddings have been around for generations. They are an important component and also can be very traditional when two people tie the knot and get married. Every wedding is different and of course the customs associated with the wedding day will differ significantly between various cultures.
In this post we will try and emphasize some of the countless traditions and customs that make up this special day.
The Veil
The Marriage Veil is without doubt the most traditional and widely used apparel that has been around for hundreds of years. A bride will cover her face with the veil disguising her until she walks down the aisle to meet her groom. It has been said the wedding veil gets rid of evil spirits and other bad energy’s.
The Wedding Dress
The wedding dress is most commonly designed and made in white. This tradition started off when Queen Victoria whore white on her wedding day. These days due to changing traditions, colours such as ivory, red, yellow, black’s and grey’s are evolving. I still believe that the stylish white wedding dress will outperform and outshine other colours.
Throwing Rice
In the Greek Orthodox tradition it is common for the guests to throw rice at the newlyweds once the ceremony has been completed. The symbol behinds rice is of wealth and fertility. It is also said that when you throw rice to the newlyweds. their lives will be prosperous and healthy.
The Bride on the Left
The bride will usually face the groom on the left hand side. This ritual has been conscientiously followed since ages. In the earlier times there was a presumption that the envious suitors won’t miss on any possibility of taking away the girl to be married. To avoid such a situation it was a ritual to place the bride on the left side of the groom. Also the bride’s hand was tied to the left hand of the groom. This guaranteed that the right hand of the groom remained free. This was to make certain the groom will effectively battle with any untoward happening as created by the envious suitors.
The Wedding Kiss
A very common tradition that you will find in any wedding and in any culture is the wedding kiss. History has shown that the kiss has evolved from the Roman Empire and ages. The kiss is assumed to be a symbol of the legal sealing of the wedding.
Bridal Bouquets
You may think bridal bouquets are present on wedding day cause they provide added style. On the contrary there is some significance behind them. Apart from the florist earning a quid for their works, bouquets included herbs which intended to keep evil spirits away.
Other Traditions
In various cultures such as Serbian and Macedonian weddings, the bride is offered money by the grooms family to wed the groom. This is still evident today and is a great deal of fun watching grown men bargain with bridesmaids and the brothers of the bride.
Traditions have been around for ages and will still evolve and be a part of our lives in generations to come. Click here on wedding tips for more information for your special day.
